Whilst it is true that recycling the actual metal is very good from the energy and resopurce saving point of view, the problems associated with recycling metals are many fold. Basically it is the contaminating substances with the base metal which can cause problems. Oily metal for example needs to be collected, stored and transported in such a way as not to cause pollution as oil is washed off by rain. Some paints and coatings are potentially problematic to the remelting furnace so high standards of fume collection and treatment are necessary there. Aluminium is seldom pure Al but more often an alloy and therefore there is a need to control the mix of metals. Also with iron, if copper is mixed in with iron scrap and melted together there is no technical way to remove the copper again. All this leads to the need for careful segregation of scrap types in order to address these negatives and maximise the positive benefit of recycling in the first place.
