There are lots of techniques that can be effective in story telling. I don’t know if you want a rundown on them, or if you’re looking for something more of a literary nature. Great storytellers engage their audiences. Eye contact is important, as is body language. They tell with their whole bodies, like actors. If they are professional storytellers, they may even choreograph their performances. They make you see the story. They provide details that you can visualize, as if you were watching a movie. One trick I was taught was to see the story in my mind, and simply describe what I see. It works. It makes things much more visual, and somehow, the visuality of it carries the story forward. It is enough, in many cases, just to watch inside your head, tell what you see, without even having a clue about a plot. Not even you know where it will end, and that can be riveting, as long as it holds together, and you are honest to the story, and don’t introduce fantastic elements just to get yours
