There aren't any requirements though having some back ground working in a restaurant particularly kitchen (if you can) is obviously not a bad move. Simply having some idea of how a kitchen runs and some basic things (like using knives properly), knowing what equipment is, what it does and how it works. I looked up the tuition at Johnson and Whales (GA), which is one of the top schools in the country, the tuition was just under 22,000. There are smaller schools that are more local (especially in metropolitan areas) that are of good quality that are probably cheaper. I tried to find the tuition for one that I know about that's local to me, but the tuition wasn't listed (it should however be cheaper). I don't have a true career in pastry arts (considering it in the future however- and have extensive culinary and restaurant background), I've know a few chefs personally and you definitely on the right track considering a vocational school. If you love cooking and food in general, culinary school is the place for you. The only real requirements to get into culinary school is to have a love of food and to have a food handler's card. Once you get there, with a strong willingness to learn, you will come out of it with a huge knowledge base that you would have never thought of before you got there. You will learn how to make basic sauces and soups and how to turn left overs into a fabulous meal that others would never have dreamed of.
Keep in mind that culinary school is not for the light hearted. There are many things about the culinary world that could gross you out or that can be potentially problematic. If you are clumsy, think wisely about this profession as you are going to be around sharp objects and things that can easily give you third degree burns and land you in the hospital. Cooking is an art, but at the same time, it can be hazardous. If you have a weak stomach or you are a vegetarian, again, you should think twice about going to culinary school because while you are learning, you will have to cook meats and do things that are kind of gross, like clean grease traps that smell like a fowl sewer. These are all things that are part of the job on a regular basis and if you can't handle them, then you will not have a very successful time at culinary school.
