Cat – Felis catus Dog – Canis familiaris Horse – Equus caballus Some people classify the dog as Canis lupus familiaris, which would make it a subspecies of the grey wolf. Not everyone agrees with this, however, and personally I think it is ridiculous to say that a Chihuahua or a Poodle is a wolf. Dogs are descended from wolves, but they are different enough from their ancestor to warrant their own specific status. Consider this – if dogs are classified as no different to wolves, it would mean either that you can keep a wolf in your house without any kind of wild animal licence, or that you would require a Dangerous Wild Animals licence to own a dog!
