What are the symptoms of lack of calcium?
This condition is known as hypocalcemia and can result in hypocalcemic tetany, a disease characterized by hyperexcitability of the neuromuscular system and results in carpopedal spasms. Hypocalcemic tetany is often caused by a dificiency of parathyroid hormone (hypoparathyroidism). The parathyroids control the levels of serum calcium but hypothyroidism isn’t the only condition that can cause hypocalcemia. Mild hypocalcemia is asymptomatic. Severe hypocalcemia symptoms are cardiac arrhythmias and tetany with hyperaresthesia of the hands, feet, lips and tongue. Bone and tooth problems (pathological fractures and bone loss at tooth sockets) can be an indirect effect. Blood will pull calcium from bone to increase circulating levels. But you would die from cardiac standstill before this could occur.
