What are the technologies I can use in exhibits? What is the range of possibility?
Videos and touchscreen programs are often the first two media forms people think of in exhibits, but in fact there is a wide range of technologies that may be used. At the simple end, ambient audio may provide an element of realism to an environment, while at the elaborate end, custom interfaces in interactive environments can facilitate a very high degree of visitor interaction. The important thing is to be aware of the range of possibilities and determine what technologies (if any) are most appropriate to the exhibit. This table shows a listing of some of the major categories of technologies I’ve worked on or observed over the years. The list is by no means comprehensive, but it does cover 90% of the range that is out in exhibits in mid-1996.
