What are the technologies or solutions that Indian Oils IS department is evaluating at this stage?
We are focusing on RFID, Wi-fi, and mobile computing. On RFID front, intitally, we are looking at tracking of our tankers. Once it becomes economical we are planning to use it for tracking LPG cylinders as once every five years LPG cylinders have to be tested. We are in the process of starting an RFID pilot. On the Wi-Fi front, we are planning to connect large number of offices through Wi-Fi nodes as the plan is to eliminate wires and we are looking at having around 100 plus offices Wi-Fi enabled. On the mobile computing front, we are looking at two applications. One for our own sales force requirements and other for our clients. We have a large sales force in the field as we have around 450 marketing offices spread across length and breadth of the country. These marketing offices look after customers, retail outlets, LPG, and lube marketing. At any given time, the marketing people need info about a customer.
