What are the Three Sisters?
Corn, beans, and squash are the three inseparable sisters always planted in conjunction by Northeastern Native American tribes. The corn stalk provides a pole for the beans to twine themselves around. The beans produce nitrogen, improving the soil quality, and their embrace helps to stabilize the corn. The low-growing squash offers ground cover, generating mulch beneath its leaves and keeping the ground moist with its shade.
