What are the treatment options for abnormal uterine bleeding?
If the bleeding is caused by hormonal irregularity, then it can be treated with medications such as progesterone or oral contraceptives. Duration of treatment depends on the cause of the hormonal irregularity. In general, side effects from treatment is minimal in otherwise healthy women. If the bleeding is caused by something in the uterus, as demonstrated by sonogram or hysterogram, then medications won t work. This kind of bleeding, caused by polyps, submucus fibroids, uterine irregularities, or anatomical uterine irregularities such as synechiae (scar tissue within the lining of the uterus) , will require hysteroscopic surgery. If the bleeding has no mechanical or hormonal cause, then endometrial ablation can be used for treatment. Endometrial ablation is the removal of the endometrial lining of the uterus by use of a hysteroscope (a telescopic device that permits visualization of the interior of the uterus).
