What Are the Treatments for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease?
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD, is characterized by fatty deposits in the liver that are unrelated to alcohol abuse. Inflammation may occur and symptoms, such as fatigue and tenderness in the upper right abdominal area may be present. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease can progress to severe liver damage such as cirrhosis. Signs of NAFLD include elevated liver enzymes and high triglycerides, usually found in routine bloodwork. There is no standard treatment for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Recommendations center on decreasing risk factors and managing associated conditions such as obesity, diabetes and high cholesterol.
