There are basically two types of child care, home-based and center-based. • Home-based options • A relative or friend • A licensed home (This means the providers program has met certain baseline standards and there is a limit on the number of children she/he can take.) • An unlicensed home (This means the provider has chosen not to become licensed. Legally she can care for up to two unrelated children at a time.) • Center-based options (All center based programs are licensed; some may also be accredited.) • Community preschools • Early childhood centers (Some take only infants and toddlers; others a combination of infants, toddlers and preschoolers.
