Recently, many people who have New York State drivers licenses, learners permits, or non-driver IDs have received letters from DMV asking them to verify their Social Security Numbers (SSNs). DMV sends the letter when a name, date of birth and SSN in its database do not match the information in the Social Security Administrations database. The letters say that people must contact the DMV within 15 days or else their driver license, learner permit, or non-driver ID may be suspended in the future. DMV s purpose is to verify the identity of people in its database, but this program of verifying the information provided to them is causing big problems .in immigrant communities.
