Schools can not charge for school-time activities but they can invite voluntary contributions to make the school fund go further. All requests for funds must make it clear that the request is for voluntary contributions. Governing bodies must ensure that it is clear that children of parents who do not contribute will not be restricted from the activity or treated any differently. If an activity can not take place without the help from parents, this should be explained and if there is no means of making up any shortfall, the trip or activity must be cancelled. The school must have a Charging Policy for any activities which are outside of school hours or are for music tuition. If a charge is made it must not exceed the cost of the actual service.  more
