What are wood shingles and shakes?
Wood shingles (and shakes) are made from treated wood and give a house a very appealing rustic appearance. However, they are less fire resistant than other types of roofing material, and can cost much more than traditional asphalt shingles. They generally last between 15 and 20 years. Wood shakes are thick, rough, uneven shingles that are hand split and sawn on one or both sides.
