What beliefs and actions influenced Mr Nelson Mandela as a leader?
Mr Mandela’s actions were driven by an unshakeable belief in the equality of all people and his determination to overthrow the racist system of apartheid. Mr Mandela helped to organise and to lead many peaceful protest campaigns but after many violent disruptions by the state it became clear to him and his colleagues that the regime would not allow peaceful change. In 1961 they formed Umkhonto weSizwe (Spear of the Nation) – also known as MK as an army for freedom fighters and launched the armed struggle.
