What body language gives away a liar?
Body language is peculiar to only one culture. Eg most body language books are written by white anglo-saxon background people or Americans. If, for these backgrounds, lowering eyes is a sign of lying, then they regard many Asians as “shifty” because traditionally they do not maintain eye contact in conversations. However, for western, anglo-saxon background, the body language that indicates lying is looking to the left before answering, avoiding gaze, fidgetting etc Because these have proved unreliable in the past, however, major crime squads now emply a system called Facial Action Coding System (FACS), a catalogue of the facial movements of humans. It was designed by Paul Ekman, former professor of psychology at the University of California at San Francisco, and is much better at assessing the reactions of humans, no matter the ethnic or cultural background.
