It actually was in 1856 that the Atlantic Telegraph Company began, in order to carry instantaneous communications across the Atlantic Ocean via cable. Two years later, in 1858, it successfully laid the cable across the ocean, connecting Newfoundland and Ireland. It was the first company to accomplish the feat.
