What Cause Oil to go Rancid ?
Most vegetable oils are polyunsaturated liquid oils. Polyunsaturated means that the oil molecule contains bonds that are unstable and although can be digested easier, the bonds of the oil molecule are easily attacked by oxygen. Oils such as Sweet Almond, Safflower, Canola and others all will go rancid and get sticky and smell. These oils also are attracted to the fibers in sheets and are nearly impossible to completely wash out. Coconut Oil is a saturated oil with a melting temperature of 76 degrees. Since it is saturated there are no unstable bonds to go rancid. Coconut oil does not have the affinity for fibers in sheets so washes out easily. We add the Isopropyl Palmitate (an ester of coconut oil) to lower the melt temperature of the Massage Oil to near room temperature.
