Bananas typically ripen in hot, moist environments such as South America or Africa. They will tend to brown anyway because of its ripening process but if placed in a cool, dry environment (such as the refrigerator) they will ripen (brown) much quicker. They always turn brown when they are bruised, similar to other fruits, not sure why that is though.
