What causes abdominal migraines?
Nobody knows for sure. There may be involvement of parts of the brain that send nerve signals to the intestines (autonomic nervous system). Some believe that serotonin or other hormones that act on the brain as well as the intestine may play a role. Some believe that the intestines react to chemicals that cause dilation or constriction of the blood vessels. Other medical experts question whether abdominal migraines are actually a form of another functional disorder.
