What Is Blue Green Algae Before we can explain what causes blue-green algae we need to understand what it is. In the most simple of terms it is several types of algae that reside in the same area and they are made of a bacteria known as Cyanobacteria that live in shallow, still and slow moving waters. Natural Aspects For Growth In order for blue-green algae to thrive, several factors must be met. First the temperate must be warm. This is why you don’t seen algae in the dead of winter in most locations. Second, there must be adequate sunlight as the bacteria that create algae needs sunlight to grow and thrive in general. Other Aspects Phosphorous and nitrogen also play a part in the creation of blue-green algae. These substances are found in human and animal waste, but they most commonly come from the fertilizers we use for our crops. Much of this algae is also cultivated due to lawn and agricultural run off and in some cases improperly situated septic systems.
