A developmental disability is a condition in which functional impairment is a result of a genetic disorder, a disease, impaired growth pattern, or is just unknown. The impairment begins any time prior to adulthood (age 21). It is a specific diagnosis, is usually lifelong, and possibly requiring extended or skilled care. A developmental delay is simply a slower rate of development by a child-a child who may not be reaching his/her developmental milestones at the average age other children reach them.
