The Illinois Department of Public Health tells visitors to their website, IDPH.State.il.us, that sulfide gas is also known as “sewer gas” because of the unpleasant smell it produces. Health Risks At these low levels sulfide gas is harmless, despite the fact that is makes the water smell foul. Short-Term Help Disinfecting the whole water system by chlorinating the water may help short-term, but is not a permanent solution to the issue. Oxidizing Filters When standard filters are ineffective, installing a special oxidizing filter may resolve the issue.
