What Causes Seizures in Babies?
Seizures occur when the brain’s electrical system malfunctions. A baby may have a seizure that lasts for only seconds or for a few minutes. Seizures usually are characterized by jerky movements on one or both sides of the body. Babies may also roll their eyes, blink rapidly and stare blankly. Also, the baby’s body may become momentarily stiff. Rarely, a baby may stop breathing during a seizure. A seizure may be a one time occurrence for a baby or it may become a regular occurrence if an underlying condition exists. For those children who continue to have seizures with no identifiable cause, a diagnosis of epilepsy is likely.
