Sewage has a natural tendency to produce odors. All sewers have some odors. The plumbing system in your home is designed to prevent these odors from entering the house. If you are experiencing odors indoors, it is likely that there is a problem with the vapor trap.  more

The septic odors choking you out are coming from your rooftop sewer and septic tank vents, because that's the way they were designed.  Opening a window. turning on a bathroom vent fan, or even running a shower uses air inside the house which is quickly replaced by sucking in the air surrounding the outside of the house.

First, all drain and sewage waste from your house flows into a sewer or septic tank

Secondly, as waste water flows into any drain, foul, toxic, gas is displaced and must be ventedout the rooftop vent stack, or the water will not go down the drain.  New and Old,  all drain designs minimize plumbing costs, which although less expensive initially, make sewer odors far more common.

In many areas it in now law that all drain pipe roof vents are fitted with Sweetfilter type
activated carbon filter vents when a new house is constructed or when aerated septic tanks are used.

However, they can be installed into existing systems which is often necessary to assure odor free operation of the vent pipe.
