What causes syphilis?
Syphilis is caused by a bacterial infection. Either you or your partner could be carrying the disease without knowing about it. The symptoms of syphilis is similar to genital herpes but the sores are painless. If untreated syphilis can cause heart problems and brain problems. Syphilis is treated with antibiotics, but you should avoid any sort of sexual contact until the infection has cleared. You will also need to have further check ups once the infection has gone, the doctor will normally take blood samples to check everything is back to normal.
