You should think less about what degree specifically you need and more about what skills you need. Politicians do a lot of speaking, writing and analyzing. So Social sciences are good but there are a myriad of options. Many politicians get a Bachelor’ Degree in Political Science or History and then go on and get a graduate degree like Law School. Actually, a second cousin of mine is currently a Mayor and only has completed his high school. Precisely: It would be better to have a degree to gain more credibility with wanting to be a Politician, especially in Political Science or Law. Although, I would probably vote without hesitation for someone who did not have a degree but did gain knowledge in working in the field as well as genuine care and legitimate concern(s) for the people/society as a whole, a clear history of those demonstrated abilities over a person who goes to obtain a degree to have the ‘status’ and evidently lacks integrity & character, especially in their own life as a leader.

No degree of any kind is required to be a politician. Is a degree were required, that would probably bring up some thorny constitutional issues. Having a law degree is an excellent qualification. Most lawyers are not like the slimy ones you read about in the news. Politicians make laws; it makes sense that they should be trained in that area.

Strictly speaking, a degree isn’t “required.” However, having one will almost certainly help a lot. Many politicians have law degrees, and many aspiring politicians get law degrees. Other possibilities would include degrees dealing with government, administration, or international relations, depending on what kind of politician you want to be.
