What considerations have been made to promote children walking to school and their safety whilst doing so?

Staffordshire County Council would prefer children to be able to walk to and from school wherever possible, to encourage sustainable travel and promote health and exercise. Safer Routes to Schools and school/college travel plans are developed to make this easier for pupils. The Council would also prefer pupils to use existing public transport services instead of travelling by car. This will help to reduce peak hour congestion and limit environmental effects. 1) Safer Routes to Schools is a project which aims to enable children to walk and cycle to and from school. Through the introduction of area-wide traffic calming and the creation of safer walking and cycling networks. These are supported by school based education and training programmes. A steering group oversees each school’s project and has representatives from the school including staff, governors, parents and pupils, members and officers from the County and District Councils and other representatives from the local community. 2
