WHAT CONSTITUTES A GOOD COUNSELOR?
A good counselor is able to soothe and reduce emotional pain by providing insight, inspiration, and understanding. Change is an inevitable consequence of life that sometimes causes significant stress and difficulty. Often, we don’t know how to deal with change and the resulting stress. We then resort to self-sabotaging behaviors like drinking, excessive shopping, over-eating, or sexual compulsions in a desperate attempt to reduce emotional pain. These do nothing but mask the pain for short periods of time. They actually create far more problems in the long run. When it comes to psychological, social and emotional issues, we are often left to ourselves with little or no support. Classrooms don’t focus on these important issues, nor do families in many cases.
