What could a property & casualty insurance agent expect to make a year?

We have an independent office (I am NOT the owner, just an agent). We mainly do P&C but do a little Life & Health as well. We represent SEVERAL big players in the market. What we have found is that a lot of the major carriers will want a contract ensuring that you will write a certain dollar amount annually. For example, Progressive might require $150,000 in premium to them, totaling everything from personal and commercial lines. So be cautious, especially in the beginning, to not take on so many contracts that you cannot fulfill the requirements. Other carriers will give you a contract without the premium requirements. There are a lot of agents who represent JUST Nationwide or State Farm. The trouble with that is that you are limited….for example, if a client comes in and needs car, home, boat, and an umbrella policy; while you can get all with Nationwide or State Farm, if you are an independent agent who represents Travelers, Safeco, Progressive, etc you can offer more quote option
