What courses do you need to do to become a counsellor?
Well, there are several ways of going about it. I started a course run at the local adult education center which was entitled: Certificate in counselling skills, which was a course on the basics of counselling. It would then have progressed to level two on completion. Some places offer free training for those who volunteer with them. Around here there is a group called Cadas (Cumbria alcohol and drug services) which has a ‘peer counselling’ scheme, whereby a person would volunteer to be a peer counsellor, and would recieve full training. I’d suggest going to places that do focus on counselling, such as MIND or the citizens advice bureau or even connexions, and ask what kind of schemes they have for counsellor training. Or check your local adult ed center for courses.
