What courses should I take in a social work programme ?
Most modules in social work programmes are generic. There are core modules in social work that one must take. Nevertheless, try to include a module in: (1) Social Policy (2) Human Development (3) Community Development (4) Basic Interviewing & Counselling Skills (5) Theories in Social Work Intervention (6) Advanced Theories in Social Work Intervention (if casework and counselling is your interest) (7) Social Work with Families (8) Other modules depending on interest such as: a. human sexuality b. working with children & youth c. working with the elderly d. health / medical social work e. school social work f. working with persons with disabilities Get to know the social work specialisation and lecturer(s) in which your social work programme is renowned for. At graduate level, social work students get to choose to either learn under a ‘guru’ or a chosen specialisation. This makes little difference for an undergraduate social work programme.
