Slander and libel are two forms of defamation (slander is normally spoken, and libel is published or broadcast), but they are NOT crimes, rather they are a civil tort, so don’t expect the police to get involved, you have to sue as a civil matter. There is little point pursuing these cases normally, unless there is real damage suffered, and the person you are suing has some significant wealth, to make suing worthwhile (imprisonment is not an option, only monetary damages). Lying to a court though IS a crime, the crime of perjury, which is very serious and can result in a very long prison sentence.
