What criteria determine dependency status?
You are considered an independent student if you meet one of the following criteria: • Born before January 1, 1987, for the 2010-2011 award year; or, Born before January 1, 1988 for the 2011-2012 award year • If you are, or were upon reaching the age of majority (18 yrs of age in Ohio) an emancipated minor (court ordered release from control of your parent or guardian) or in legal guardianship, both as ruled by a court in your state of legal residence at the time of the ruling • Married as of the date you filed the FAFSA application • Will be a graduate or professional student at the start of the award year • Currently serving on active duty for purposes other than training • Are a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces • Have dependents other than a spouse • Have been an orphan, foster child, or ward/dependent of the court (court having legal custody with parental rights terminated) at any time since the age of 13 • Have been determined at any time since July 1, 2009 (July 1, 2010 if applyi
