What decision causes the princess “days and nights of anguished deliberation” in “The Lady, or the Tiger”?
ladyvols1 Teacher High School – 9th Grade eNotes Editor The princess is having a great deal of trouble trying to decide if she should tell her lover the door which the lady is behind, or the door the tiger is behind. The princess says she cares about the courtier, but she has seen the “lady” who will be behind the door “flirt” with him. She isn’t sure if she would rather see him married to a woman she doesn’t like, or if she would rather see him dead by the claws of the tiger. The Princess is a great deal like her father,”that hot-blooded, semi-barbaric princess, her soul at a white heat beneath the combined fires of despair and jealousy.” She might not be able to have the Courtier for herself, but she doesn’t think she wants anyone else to have him either. This internal conflict is what is keeping her awake at night.
