What defines a thrown bat?
Answer Hi David, Well you can’t get an out with any thrown bat (well that’s not totally true if you throw your bat at a fielder to prevent them from making a play you would be out, for interference, not for throwing your bat). The best you can get is an ejection. I know outs are common (sometimes with ejection) but there is no rule to give us an out and even though it’s a wrong ruling, teams for years have accepted outs. If an out is called it is protestable as a mis-application of the playing rules. POE 52 tells us that in order to get an ejection the bat must be intentionally thrown in anger. There is a difference between a “thrown” bat and a bat that is “tossed”, “flipped” etc. and a good umpire “umpires when they need too”. Let me know if you need anything more.
