What Did The Pawnee Tribe Wear?
Pawnee Indian leaders sometimes wore the long warbonnets that Plains Indians are famous for. Pawnee men shaved their heads except for a scalplock (one long lock of hair in back) and wore a porcupine roach on top. Pawnee women wore their hair either loose or braided. The Pawnees also painted their faces for special occasions. They used different patterns for war paint, religious ceremonies, and festive decoration. Females would wear skirts and moccasins in the summer time. In winter they would wear buckskin dresses with leggings. Both men and women would pierce their ears and wear ornate beaded earrings. The Pawnee also had hunting and military societies. Wearing the Pawnee skin shirt was one of the outstanding symbols of high status. Very few men were privileged to wear them. Most ceremonial shirts had quilted or beaded bands over their shoulders. Painted hands indicated hand-to-hand combat.
