What did Ulysses S. Grant do in the Battle of Vicksburg?

0

Grant tried to lay siege to Vicksburg for many months, attacking it again and again – but failed. Then Grant decided to go around the city, through the swamps and rivers and to attack the city from behind. The siege weakened the Confederate John Pemberton’s 30,000 men inside Vicksburg and they surrendered on 4th July 1863, the day after the Union won at Gettysburg. The capture of Vicksburg very important strategically as it gave the union control of the Mississipi and cut the confederacy in two.
