Most attorneys, bar associations and courts support mediation. The Virginia Law Foundation, a non-profit grant-making organization funded by attorneys was instrumental in providing startup funds for most of the non-profit mediation centers in Virginia. The American Bar Association and the Virginia Bar have long been supporters of mediation. In fact the ethical and practice rules for Virginia attorneys have recently been amended to require that attorneys discuss mediation and other alternative dispute resolution options with their clients. The Supreme Court of Virginia provides funding for some court-referred mediation and is actively involved in promoting its use in state courts. And, in fact, many courts in Virginia have active mediation referral programs including our local courts in Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Loudoun and Prince William.
