Barbers and Cosmetologists are similar in some ways and they differ in other ways. They are both professionals who style hair, however barbers are often associated with only styling men's hair. Other than styling men's and women's hair, cosmetologists can be trained to provide other treatments. Some cosmetologists are also trained to provide manicures, pedicures, scalp treatments, facials, make-up analysis and maintain hairpieces. Educational Requirements to Become a Barber or Cosmetologist: Formal training and education is required for these careers. Any professional in the field of cosmetology, including barbers and cosmetologists, must have a license. To obtain a license, students must receive formal training through barbering or cosmetology courses, which are available at community colleges, technical schools and cosmetology schools.
