What do Christians think of the movie/musical Jesus Christ Superstar?
I thought it was an important portrayal of the humanity of Jesus. They took some liberties with the story but made it believable, giving motivations to the characters that the gospel writers hadn’t gotten around to. You could feel Jesus, Judas, Mary, the Pharisees and even the apostles thinking. I have to admit that when the record album first came out, I’d immediately follow it with the instrumental fanfare from the first track of the Moody Blues’ “Days of Future Past”, just to complete it.
I have a few reservations about the story line. Most importantly they left out the resurrection. That is the most important part of Jesus’ life. I think plays, movies and books like this can serve a purpose in creating an interest in spiritual things, especially if it can get people to explore for themselves the story of Jesus.
