What do digital certificates not do?
Digital certificates are a complex technology with many potential applications. In implementing this service for the university, ITS has chosen to limit its scope in some ways. However, the service will allow for expansion and integration with future services that might use digital certificates as part of a security package. Here are some important facts about what the service does not include: • Authorization is limited to faculty and staff. Student use may be considered in the future. • Certificates are for use by individuals. Role-based certificates are not supported. This means that the name on a certificate is an individual name rather than a title, such as Information Security Officer. • Server certificates are not issued. • Certificates are not built into any Web or token-based authentication methods offered by ITS on campus at this time.
