What do DIVX/RM/WMV/ASF/MPEG mean?
These are different types of digital files, using different compression formats to store the video. The most popular of which is DIVX (very similar to mp3s in that it can successfully compress video into a small file with little loss of picture/sound quality). RM (Realmedia) files are viewable with use of Realplayer. ASF is an older but somewhat popular compression method as well. WMV is a Microsoft compression method similar to DIVX, but generally viewed as not as good as DIVX, therefore few encodes are done in WMV. MPEG video files are generally larger then most other compression methods, but do not require a very fast system to use and are natively supported by just about every multimedia viewing program out there. DIVX files require a high end Pentium class machine at bare minimum to run (Pentium II class machine or faster suggested). Also there are many different versions of DIVX, so having one codec will often allow you run most but not all of the various DIVX formats. It’s best
