Every answer here is good except the paper towel…cold compress to stop the bleeding, then use the other remedies here (only one not all of them, lol) This may happen from time to time especially if your dog has dark colored nails, but you will get better and better at it and eventually, it wont happen hardly at all. Just be aware that your dogs toe may be sore for a day or two (just like if you cut your own nail too short) Also, I would invest in a styptic pen, they come in handy and work very well. They arent too expensive either. Add: do not use baby powder.

Before trimming nails, get your suppies just in case- grab a few paper towels and some flour, corn starch, or styptic powder. I wouldn’t use the stick form sold for humans for razor nicks-it burns when I’ve used it. So does the silver nitrate they often use at the vet’s office. Anyway, if you do quick you dog, grab the paper towel and hold it with a little pressure with one hand to catch the blood. With the other hand, get a good sized pinch of whichever powder you’re using. Push the powder into the end of the nail. If you just tap it on there without applying pressure, it won’t work (or at least not quickly). After maybe a good 15 seconds of applying the powder with medium pressure, look to see if it’s trying to bleed through. One time is usually good, but if you got the quick pretty deeply, you may have to repeat the application of the powder. And yeah, it hurts, but it’s not life-threatening.
