The 50-year longevity of the Kumon method, which has been used by over 15 million students worldwide since 1958, is perhaps the most powerful indicator of the Kumon’s ability to positively develop the math and reading potential of students. However, in the past few years, at least two academic studies in the U.S. have been published which evaluated the impact of Kumon Math over a period of several years. One long-term study of Kumon Math students, published in The Roeper Review Summer 2005 by University of Tulsa researchers McKenna, Hollingsworth and Barnes, found that two years after instruction, 4th graders who had received Kumon instruction as 2nd graders scored almost two standard deviations higher on Iowa Basic standardized tests. Another study published in 2006 by Michigan State researchers Houang and Schmidt found that 87% of Kumon students in seventh and eighth grade answered questions on fractions correctly versus 51% of Non-Kumon students studied.
