What do shelters do with dead dogs after putting them to sleep?

When I was a kid, I volunteered at a Humane Society in my town. One weekend while there, I stumbled upon a huge dumpster piled high and spilling over with dead dogs. I do not know where they went from there. It was a chilling sight. I hope people that work for shelters that put animals to sleep will write what they KNOW happens to the dead dogs. I honestly don’t know where they went from there, but they weren’t cremated. At least, not at that time. In my city, the city pound cremates the dead dogs. I found that out from a person that works there. I don’t know what my local HS or SPCA do.

It all depends on where you live, what the common practices are there and what the laws are there. Every answer I have seen so far is true. Some dogs are thrown in garbage bags and tossed in bins that are collected by toxic waste removal companies. Some places, if they have the facilities, cremate the animals. Some are donated to schools and colleges for medical reasons (although they are usually strays). If you want to find out about your town, call up the Humane Society or Animal shelter and ask. They will (hopefully) tell you.
