What do the AFP Test Results Mean?
A positive AFP test means that the risk for Down’s syndrome is more than 1 in 250. You could be told that the risk is 1 in 200, which is still only a .5% change! And even if the test comes out negative, it does not mean that your baby does not have a condition. If you do test positive, you will probably want to discuss having a further ultrasound and amniocentesis to determine for certain if your baby has any of these conditions. * Personally I did the AFP test with my first child and they came back negative. I declined the test with my second child because I didn’t want the unnecessary stress of a false positive.
