What Do the Codes on Plastic Bottles Mean?
In America, the trend towards an eco-friendly society continues to grow. Recycling leads this trend. In 2007, approximately 1/3 of the garbage created was recycled. The Society of the Plastics Industry initiated the resin identification coding system in 1988. This is a voluntary system designed to assist consumers in identifying which plastics can be recycled. The codes also help manufacturers by providing a consistent way to distinguish the resin content of the plastics that make their way to the various recycling plants. This code allows plastics to be recycled more efficiently.
