What do the different kinds of lenses do?

I use a couple of lenses, one is wider, and the progress into the zoom area. I have a 18-70mm Nikkor lens, so on the 18 end I can get nice wide images, and it zooms to 70mm for a bit closer up. For zooming or portraits I use a 70-200mm VR Nikkor lens. I mostly shoot portraits though so thats what I focus on usually when I look at lenses.

Learning about lenses can be tricky, but once you learn its easy. The lower the number, like 10, 17 etc… thats WIDE angle so for group shots and landscapes for instance. Just means that much further you have to back up. The middle numbers, 24-105 for instance are normal shooting distances. The higher numbers like 105-600 are zoom and those get super big. Another thing is the speed… AND the fstops—1.8 means you dont need to use your flash (except in certain situations) because it allows more light to come in. 4.5-5 (or 4-5.5 or something) means it will let less light in so in darker situations you will need a flash.
