On Saturday, March 28, at 8.30pm they will all be taking part in the WWF’s Earth Hour 2009. Aberdeenshire Council is encouraging staff and communities to join millions across the globe in switching off their lights for 60 minutes in a graphic demonstration of support for international action on climate change. WWF’s Earth Hour lights-out initiative began in Sydney, Australia in 2007 as an awareness-raising exercise. In 2008, it went spectacularly global when floodlighting was turned off on hundreds of landmark buildings and some 50 million people in more than 270 cities in over 35 countries turned off their lights for one hour in March. WWF Scotland is working with local authorities across the country urging them to take part and cut the lights on prominent landmarks for an hour. Aberdeenshire Council is one of many Scottish local authorities signing up to Earth Hour 2009.
